CDMX MOVIE CLUB XXII: City of God

From Brazil to Brazil. Last time, we looked at a world where the system had become so powerful, absurd and dehumanizing that the individual could barely survive inside it. This time, we go to Rio de Janeiro and ask almost the opposite question: what happens when the system fails you completely? City of God takes us into a community where poverty, inequality, violence and institutional abandonment shape the possibilities available from childhood. But beneath the violence is a harder question: when the system is broken, how much freedom do we really have to choose who we become? A film about survival, agency and the systems that shape us—and whether escaping them is the same as changing them. Please watch the film before we meet. Esta vez vamos a Río de Janeiro para hacernos casi la pregunta opuesta: ¿qué pasa cuando el sistema te abandona por completo? Ciudad de Dios nos lleva a una comunidad donde la pobreza, la desigualdad, la violencia y el abandono institucional moldean las posibilidades desde la infancia.
