🛶 Phoenix Heat Dragon Boat — New Paddler Tryouts (Monday Evenings)

Curious about dragon boat paddling? Looking for a fun, challenging, and welcoming team environment? Phoenix Heat Canoe Club hosts New Paddler Tryouts every Monday evening, and we’d love to have you join us on the water.

This practice is beginner-friendly and designed to introduce new paddlers to the sport while giving you a feel for our team culture, coaching style, and on-water training.

First time with us?
Please complete our 30-second safety waiver before arriving:
https://azdba.org/welcome/guest-waiver/

What to Expect

On-water practice lasts about 90 minutes
You’ll paddle in a dragon boat alongside experienced team members
Practice includes basic technique instruction, drills, and short race-style pieces
Training blends endurance, interval, and power work, with guidance throughout

If you’ve never paddled before, don’t worry — we suggest arriving a bit early so we can walk you through boat commands, calls, and basic paddling technique before launching.

Attendance Note (Important!)

If the RSVP count on Meetup looks low, don’t be discouraged.
Our team primarily manages attendance through a separate app, and Monday practices typically have 20–40 paddlers on the water. Showing up matters more than the number you see online.

What to Bring

Water bottle
Sunglasses or a hat/visor
Comfortable clothing and shoes you don’t mind getting wet
Quick-dry athletic materials are best
Waterproof or water-resistant sunscreen

Paddles and PFD life vests are provided.

Location

📍 Tempe Town Lake Marina
550 E Tempe Town Lake
Tempe, AZ 85288
After practice, the crew sticks around for 10–15 minutes to help rinse and put away the boat — a great chance to meet teammates and ask questions.

If you’re looking to try something new, meet great people, and get a full-body workout on the water, this is the perfect place to start. Just show up — we’ll take care of the rest.
