📄 Sent out plenty of applications but still waiting for an interview? Bring your resume and your questions, and let’s talk about your next steps—from job applications to life at work.
This session is open to people from all academic backgrounds and career fields. Whether you’re applying for roles in IT, data, marketing, accounting and finance, HR, operations, project management, or another area, you’re welcome to join us.
We’ll review selected resumes submitted by attendees, exploring career direction, how to present experience, alignment with target roles, and resume structure. Through live editing examples, we’ll demonstrate practical ways to improve your resume. We’ll also discuss job search preparation, choosing roles, interview communication, and adjusting to the workplace.
Join Lightman and University of Melbourne alumnus Ethan Wang on 2 October at the University of Melbourne. Together, we’ll connect the experience on your resume with the realities of job hunting and working life—and explore how you can prepare for what comes next.
🔍 01 | From Your Resume to the Workplace: What’s on Your Mind?
Job search challenges can stem from how you present your experience, but also from your career direction, preparation priorities, and understanding of the roles you’re applying for.
If you’re looking for work, considering a career change, or starting your first job, you may have asked yourself:
I’ve applied for plenty of roles but rarely hear back. What should I check first?
I’m interested in several types of roles. How do I narrow my focus and tailor my resume?
I have academic, work, and project experience. How do I communicate my strengths clearly?
Without an internship or local work experience, what else can I use to demonstrate my abilities?
In an interview, how do I move beyond “I was involved” and explain my individual contribution?
If I’m changing careers or exploring new opportunities, how can I identify my transferable experience?
How do I understand workplace expectations and adapt to team communication and collaboration?
Which skills should I prioritise developing to address gaps in my job search or work?
Through real resume examples, guest experiences, and audience questions, we’ll help you clarify your thinking and identify practical next steps.
📝 02 | What Will We Cover?
The session will explore eight areas through examples, live edits, and open discussion:
1. Career Direction and Choosing Roles
How can you identify suitable career paths based on your background and experience? When considering different roles, how can you assess your strengths and the skills you need to develop?
2. Your Professional Summary
How can you clearly introduce your background, relevant skills, and career direction? We’ll discuss how to avoid vague statements and help recruiters quickly understand what you bring.
3. Work and Project Experience
How can you explain what you did, what you were responsible for, and what you achieved? How should you present university projects, part-time work, and student club experience?
4. Tailoring Your Resume to the Role
How can you use a job description to select relevant experience, organise your content, and naturally incorporate the skills and keywords that matter to the role?
5. Communicating Results and Live Editing Examples
How can you demonstrate your contribution using accurate figures, project scope, efficiency improvements, or practical impact? We’ll rewrite selected resume content live to show the difference between the original and revised versions.
6. Job Search Preparation and Interview Communication
Beyond your resume, what preparation deserves your time? How can you use specific examples in interviews to explain your actions, reasoning, and contributions?
7. Adjusting to the Workplace and Professional Growth
What changes should you expect when moving from university into work? How can you understand expectations, communicate and collaborate effectively, and build skills that support your future development?
8. Open Discussion and Q&A
Bring specific questions about resumes, job hunting, changing careers, or workplace challenges. Exchange ideas with our guests and learn from different perspectives and real experiences.
