There’s something special about exploring the Surrey Hills in winter. The woodlands become quieter, the countryside takes on a different character, and the rolling hills offer beautiful views across the landscape.

While many people prefer the warmth of their homes during December, we’ll be doing something a little different — heading outdoors to enjoy the fresh winter air, explore beautiful countryside and give ourselves a rewarding fitness challenge! 💪

This Saturday, we’ll set off from Dorking Station for a circular hike through some of the beautiful countryside of the Surrey Hills National Landscape, formerly known as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Our route will take us across Ranmore Common, through Abinger Roughs and Doorlap Woods, before heading towards Westcott and eventually returning to Dorking.

Expect a lovely mixture of peaceful woodland trails, open countryside, rolling hills, steady climbs and descents, and perhaps a little mud to remind us that winter has arrived!

And who knows? We might even be rewarded with some beautiful winter sunshine. 🌤️

🌲 Highlights of the Hike

🌳 Ranmore Common: Beautiful woodland trails, open countryside and lovely views across the Surrey Hills.
🍂 Abinger Roughs: Peaceful woodland paths, mature trees and natural surroundings, offering a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the quieter countryside.
🌿 Doorlap Woods: More woodland trails and opportunities to explore some of the area’s lesser-known paths.
⛰️ Rolling hills and varied terrain: A mixture of climbs, descents, woodland paths and countryside tracks to keep things interesting.
🐎 Wildlife and countryside: Keep your eyes open for birds, livestock and other wildlife. Some trails are shared with horse riders and mountain bikers.
🏡 Westcott: A charming Surrey village surrounded by beautiful countryside.

Hike Details:
📍 Meeting point: Outside Dorking Station (Dorking Deepdene Station is just 5 mins walk)
⏰ Meeting time: 10 AM for a sharp 10:15 AM start!
🚶 Distance: Approximately 13 miles
⛰️ Difficulty: Moderate
🥾 Pace: Medium brisk, fitness-focused

This is a fitness-focused hike rather than a casual stroll. There are some steady inclines, and sections of the trail may become muddy or slippery following rainfall.

We’ll aim to maintain a good overall pace, particularly given the shorter daylight hours, while slowing down and exercising appropriate caution wherever the terrain requires it.

Please bring:

🥾 Proper hiking boots with good grip, preferably waterproof. Trainers are not recommended.
🧥 Waterproof and windproof clothing, along with suitable warm layers.
🔦 A reliable torch or headtorch – essential, particularly with the shorter daylight hours.
🧤 Gloves, a warm hat and spare layers as appropriate.
💧 1–2 litres of water.
🥪 Packed lunch and snacks.
😊 A positive attitude and willingness to embrace a little winter adventure!

🍻 A Well-Earned Pub Stop in the end!

After completing the hike, those interested can join us for a relaxing drink or something to eat at one of the pubs near Dorking Station.

🚶 Group Etiquette & Safety

To ensure everyone has an enjoyable and safe experience, please observe the following:

Stay with or behind the hike leader at all times. Do not walk ahead of the leader. It helps to keep the group together.
Always ensure you can see the group ahead of you so you do not get lost.
Some trails are shared with cyclists and horse riders, so please remain alert and give others sufficient space.
Respect livestock, wildlife, private property and the surrounding countryside.
Everyone is responsible for their own safety and for ensuring their actions do not harm themselves, other participants, animals or the environment. The organiser does not accept any risk or liability.
You must have a confirmed RSVP for this event to attend.

Please read our group’s About Us section before attending, as it contains important information about our hikes and group expectations.
