Beach Snorkel in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea

Datura Avenue, just south of Anglin's Fishing Pier in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, provides easy access to arguably the best shore diving and snorkeling in the county. The Shipwreck Snorkeling Trail, located on a shallow reef only 500 feet (152 meters) from the beach, includes several cannons, a ship's anchor and a ballast pile. Nearby is an abandoned coral restoration project known as the biorock. In addition to the SS Copenhagen, a state-designated archaeological underwater preserve, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea also has a "Shipwreck Snorkel Trail," an artificial reef that any pirate would love! Dedicated in May 2002 by underwater explorer Jean-Michele Cousteau, the artificial reef was constructed by the Marine Archaeological Council to promote Broward County’s maritime heritage. The trail was started in 1998 & took 4 years to complete. There are two sets of concrete cannons, a large anchor and a ballast pile replicating a shipwreck common in these waters many years ago. All of the shipwreck artifacts are located within a 100' x 20' area. The Shipwreck Snorkel Trail is in shallow water and is easily accessible for snorkelers to enjoy. Stats: A 150-yard swim, and then we glide north along the trail. Depth ranges from 5-15 feet. Strong, independent swimming skills REQUIRED. Must bring snorkel fins and snorkel mask.
