Let’s explore this serpentine barrens ecosystem in Owings Mills. The rocky, magnesium-rich, and easily eroded soil creates a land surface that is infertile and sparsely vegetated. There are grasses, stunted oaks and pines, and some unique and rare wildflowers.
Isaac Tyson mined the area for chromium in the 1800’s, and at one time, his mines (one of which we’ll visit) produced almost all of the world’s chromium.
The hike will be 6 miles long, and led at a pace of about 2.25 mph. There is about 500 ft of elevation gain, and several minor stream crossings. I recommend long pants for areas of tall grass, and sturdy boots for the rocky paths. Bring water and a snack or lunch to be enjoyed along the way.
Because of the sensitivity of this area, and the presence of highly rare and endangered plants, I am limiting registration to those who have hiked with this group before. After registering, you will start out on the waitlist until I let you in.
It is currently archery season at Soldiers Delight. All participants are asked to wear something bright orange or pink for safety.
