Oktoberfest at Fort Belvoir! Walk 5 or 10 km (3 or 6 mi)

OPEN ONLY TO DoD ID CARD HOLDERS or PRE-REGISTERED/VETTED GUESTS This year's NEW Walks/Volksmarches will be held on Saturday, September 26 from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm at Fort Belvoir, adjacent to Building 1188 at 13th Street and Gunston Road, and near Pullen Field. This is a different location than the last many years. Due to installation security measures, those wishing to attend the walk need a DoD ID Card or to be pre-vetted/sponsored by a DoD ID Cardholder. To be pre-vetted/sponsored, you must contact grunewar@yahoo.com and provide your fullname, DOB, state driver's license and SSN to seek access permission to post PRIOR TO SEPT 1. Both scenic trails follow mostly paved sidewalks, but there are several stretches with gravel paths, grass, and unpaved road shoulders on the 10 km trail suitable for strollers but not wheelchairs. The course is largely flat and will not be affected by inclement weather. The route is rated 1B. There are several historic buildings and markers along the way! The Volksmarch starts between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm and ends at 3:00 pm. The Oktoberfest grounds opens at 12:00 pm on Saturday. The Volksmarch is cash only! There is no online or pre-registration. Weather conditions will have little effect on the trail rating and the event will take place unless there are extreme conditions. The trail can accommodate strollers and wagons; however, they may require portaging over road curbs. The 10 km trail is unsuitable for wheelchairs. The Starting Point is Building 1188, near Tulley Gate at the corner of 13th Street and Gunston Road, adjacent to Dunkin Donuts, close to the Oktoberfest festival grounds. Directions to Tulley Gate/Entrance to Fort Belvoir: From I-95 North, take Exit 166A (Newington /Fort Belvoir). Turn right onto Backlick Road / Fairfax County Parkway. Turn left on Route 1 (Richmond Highway). Turn right and enter Fort Belvoir thru Tulley Gate and stay to the right as a visitor. After clearing security, proceed straight. Turn right at traffic light on Gunston Road. Follow Oktoberfest / Volksmarch signs to parking. From I-95 South take Exit 166A (Newington / Fort Belvoir). Merge onto Backlick Road / Fairfax County Parkway and follow the directions for I-95 North. When you arrive at Tulley Gate, tell them you are here for the Northern Virginia Volksmarchers!! This event is $2 for all walkers or $4 for those desiring Volksmarch credit! Pets can come too!
