East of Eden

In October the Wellington Modern Classics Book Club is reading East of Eden by John Steinbeck, a novel of family, identity, morality, and the eternal struggle between good and evil.

Set in California’s Salinas Valley across several generations, the novel follows the intertwined lives of two families, the Trasks and the Hamiltons, as they navigate love, ambition, betrayal, and the search for meaning. Drawing inspiration from the story of Cain and Abel, Steinbeck explores the forces that shape us—inheritance, choice, forgiveness, and the possibility of redemption.
