Humanitarian aid groups provide water, food, first aid, and other essential supplies to migrants crossing the border in southern Arizona. Our goal is to reduce suffering for people making the difficult journey through the harsh Sonoran Desert. The Samaritans is one of those grassroots, volunteer-run humanitarian aid organizations.

Join me for a backcountry aid run from Sasabe, heading southeast along the border wall to the Samaritan Aid Camp. From there, we’ll make our way toward Arivaca by taking a shortcut four-wheeling.

This is a beautiful, remote part of southern Arizona, but it is also an active border region. There is always some uncertainty about what we may encounter. That could include migrants traveling through the area, law enforcement, armed civilian groups, or other activity connected to the border. Most trips are uneventful, but everyone joining should understand that this is not a controlled environment and unexpected situations are possible.

We are there to provide humanitarian aid, explore the desert, and stay out of anyone else’s way. We will use common sense, avoid confrontation, and change our route if anything feels unsafe.

Anyone with strong opinions about border security or immigration policy should see this part of Arizona firsthand. It is very different from reading about it or seeing it on the news.

Along the way, we’ll experience some spectacular desert country while helping maintain humanitarian aid supplies. If you enjoy remote roads, four-wheel-drive adventures, and doing something useful at the same time, this should be a memorable day.

We’ll finish with lunch in Arivaca or, depending on how the day unfolds, find a scenic spot and tailgate a picnic.

Come prepared for rough roads, remote country, and a little unpredictability.
