We invite you to join our friends at GWCN (Global Walkability Correspondents Network) for a free guided walking tour of Maxwell Market Street, home of the Maxwell Street Polish, and the surrounding area. Join us for a walk through the Maxwell Street Market and the surrounding area . We will meet at 1 pm at the corner of Roosevelt & Halstead and walk approximately two miles while discussing the history of the area and market, Maxwell Street Polish Sausage, and the effects of urban renewal. This will be a Maxwell Market Sunday and we will be talking about Maxwell Street Polish and will end at Express Grill. Attendees will be responsible for purchasing their own food if they are interested. Please look for the person holding the sign that says "GWCN Event Meet Here" and the corner of Roosevelt & Halstead. This event is free and welcome to all ages and abilities. We will be walking about two miles so please be prepared to wear comfortable shoes and weather appropriate clothing. GWCN Chicago is a local chapter of Global Walkability Correspondents Network. It runs at 1330 South in the numbering system running from 500 West to 1126 West. The Maxwell Street neighborhood is considered part of the Near West Side and is one of the city's oldest residential districts. It is the location of the celebrated Maxwell Street Market (sometimes known as "Jew Town" and the birthplace of Chicago blues and the "Maxwell Street Polish", a sausage sandwich. A large portion of the area is part of the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago and a private housing development sponsored by the university.
