Presented by: Wilderness Travel Course (WTC) Instructor Brian Decker

Brian has completed the John Muir Trail three separate times, experiencing a wide range of trail conditions, challenges, logistics, and unforgettable moments along the way. From permit strategies and resupply planning to altitude, gear, weather, and mental preparation, Brian will share practical advice and firsthand lessons learned from thousands of miles on the trail.

Key topics include:

JMT overview and route options
Permit systems and timing strategies
Training and physical preparation
Gear recommendations and common mistakes
Food carries and resupply logistics
Altitude, weather, and trail challenges
Solo vs. group hiking considerations
What Brian wishes he knew before his first thru-hike

Whether you’re actively planning your own JMT adventure or simply curious about what it takes to complete this incredible Sierra Nevada journey, this workshop will provide valuable insight, inspiration, and real-world perspective from someone who’s truly been boots on the ground.

Bring your questions and get ready to talk all things JMT!
