Looking for an easy morning out? Join us for a gentle walk into the Waitākere Ranges, where a 15-metre waterfall is waiting in the middle of the bush.
We’ll stay on the main track rather than the loop, so it’s a fairly flat, easy-going out and back. We’ll wander through native bush at a relaxed pace, then take the short side track down to the base of Karamatura Falls. There’s plenty of room to settle in, take photos and enjoy the sound of the water. If you’re feeling brave and it’s a warm day, the pool at the bottom is a good swimming spot. There’s also a big rock beside the falls that makes a lovely place to sit and have a snack. We’ll then walk back the same way and finish with a coffee and a catch-up.
The Hike

The track starts from a signposted carpark off Huia Road, about 45 minutes from central Auckland. There are toilets and a picnic area at the carpark.
The last part of the track is often slippery, so make sure you wear the proper hiking shoes. A short river crossing so expect wet feet.
A relaxed pace with plenty of time to chat and enjoy the scenery
The waterfall as our halfway point, then the same way back
Coffee and or a pie together at the end

Who it's for
Anyone who likes the idea of a walk without the rush. The track is easy and suits all ages and fitness levels. Nobody gets left behind, because the back of the pack is where we like to be.
What to bring
Spring weather in the ranges can change quickly, so layers are the answer. You don't need specialist gear.

Comfortable closed-toe shoes or light boots (the service road is gravel)
A rain jacket, even if the forecast looks good
A warm layer you can take off
A hat and sunscreen for the sunny patches
Water and snacks
A small daypack
A little cash or a card if you'd like an ice cream or coffee
A happy attitude

Kauri dieback
We'll clean our shoes at the stations along the way to help protect the kauri. Please arrive with clean footwear.
Getting there and carpooling
It's about a 60 minute drive from central Auckland. Carpooling is a great idea, as parking is limited and it makes the trip more fun. If you have a spare seat or need a lift, add a comment below and we'll match people up. We'll share a carpool meeting point closer to the date.
Meeting point: Karamatura carpark beside the track entrance. IF this car park is full parking is available at Settlers Museum on Huia Road.
Cancellation: If the weather turns severe, we'll update the event the evening before.
