Poetry Salon: Read, Listen, Discuss
Join us for our next English Theatre Valencia Poetry Salon! This time, we're exploring the wonderful world of children's poetry — and asking whether it's really just for children.
From imaginary worlds and curious observations to questions of identity and human connection, we'll explore four poems that capture something of the wonder, humor, and unexpected wisdom of childhood:
A. A. Milne's "Halfway Down," Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky," Robert Louis Stevenson's "My Shadow," and Shel Silverstein's "The Little Boy and the Old Man."
These poems invite us to see the familiar in unfamiliar ways: to find entire worlds in ordinary places, discover meaning in nonsense, reconsider our relationship with ourselves, and recognize the things that connect us across generations.
What can children's poetry say that adult poetry sometimes forgets how to say? And do we ever really outgrow these poems?
📖 How it works:
Texts are provided in advance and at the event.
You're welcome to read them beforehand or encounter them for the first time as we read aloud together.
Afterwards, we'll open a relaxed, guided discussion — no formal literary analysis required, just curiosity, reflection, and shared thinking.
Whether you're a native speaker or an English learner, this is a space to experience literature without pressure. These are short, accessible poems, but they open into surprisingly big questions about imagination, identity, growing up, and what it means to be human.
☕️ Hosted once again at Bruno's Lucky 13, our cozy café home for thoughtful afternoons with good food and company.
