How many ways can you say hello?
Africa is home to an incredible variety of languages and cultures, so let's spend an evening exploring some of them together!
I'm from Cameroon, and I'll introduce you to some African greetings, expressions, names and cultural traditions. But this isn't a language class and you won't just sit and listen.
Everyone gets to participate!

πŸ‘‹ Can You Guess the Language?

We'll start with a fun challenge.
I'll show you different African greetings and expressions.
Can you guess where they're used?
Don't worry if you don't know the answerβ€”that's part of the fun!

πŸ—£οΈ Learn Some African Greetings

We'll practice a few simple words and expressions together.
By the end of the evening, hopefully you'll know more ways to say:
πŸ‘‹ Hello
πŸ™ Thank you
😊 How are you?
πŸ‘‹ Goodbye
And maybe a few expressions you weren't expecting!

❀️ What's the Story Behind Your Name?

Does your name have a meaning?
Were you named after someone?
Is there a story behind it?
We'll talk about names and naming traditions and then hear from everyone.
Japanese participants can tell us about Japanese names, and participants from other countries can share their traditions too.

πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅ Now Teach Us Something!

This isn't only about Africa.
You get to become the teacher too!
Teach us a greeting, expression or interesting word from Japanese or your own language.
By the end, we might have travelled around the world through just a few words. 🌍

πŸ˜‚ What Would You Say?

We'll also explore everyday situations.
How do you greet an older person?
What do you say when entering someone's home?
How formally do you speak to someone you've just met?
Do greetings change depending on someone's age?
We'll compare how these situations might be handled in African cultures, Japan and other countries represented at the event.

πŸ’¬ Come for the Conversation

You don't need to know anything about African languages.
You don't need perfect English.
And there will definitely be no language test! πŸ˜‚
This is simply an opportunity to meet people, practice English, ask questions and learn something about Africa and each other's cultures.
🍴 Please order at least one food or drink from the venue.
Come alone or bring a curious friend.
Bring your language, your culture and your curiosity. Let's see how many ways we can say HELLO! πŸ‘‹πŸŒ
