What happens when society insists that there is only one correct way to live — and the life that makes you happy is the one everyone else considers wrong?

Sayaka Murata’s Convenience Store Woman is a sharp, unsettling, darkly humorous, and deeply thought-provoking exploration of identity, conformity, social expectations, work, belonging, and the meaning of normality.
First published in Japan in 2016, the novel follows Keiko Furukura, a 36-year-old woman who has worked part-time at the same convenience store in Tokyo for eighteen years.
Since childhood, Keiko has struggled to understand the unwritten rules of social interaction. While other people seem to instinctively know how to behave, what to say, and what is expected of them, she has always felt like an outsider.
Everything changes when she begins working at the Hiiromachi Station Smile Mart. Inside the convenience store, every action has a purpose, every interaction follows a recognizable pattern, and every employee has a clearly defined role. For the first time, Keiko discovers a world in which she knows exactly how to exist.
Yet the society around her refuses to accept her contentment. Her family, friends, and acquaintances cannot understand why an unmarried woman in her thirties would be satisfied with a part-time job, no conventional career ambitions, and no romantic relationship.
Through Keiko's unusual perspective, Murata raises questions about the invisible rules that govern our lives: Who decides what makes a person normal? Why do we measure happiness through marriage, professional success, and social status? Is fitting in a necessary condition for belonging? And can someone be genuinely happy while rejecting everything society expects of them?
Beneath its deceptively simple narrative, Convenience Store Woman offers a powerful critique of social conformity and the pressure to perform an acceptable identity. It challenges our assumptions about independence, authenticity, gender roles, and the relationship between individual happiness and collective expectations.
Both funny and deeply uncomfortable, the novel invites us to question whether the people we consider unusual are truly the ones who fail to understand society — or whether they are simply the ones who reveal how arbitrary its rules can be.

About the Author
Sayaka Murata (born 1979) is a Japanese novelist and one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Japanese literature.
Born in Inzai, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, Murata began writing fiction at a young age and later studied at Tamagawa University.
Her literary work frequently explores the tension between individuality and social conformity, particularly the expectations imposed on women concerning marriage, motherhood, sexuality, employment, and family life.
Murata is known for combining seemingly ordinary situations with unsettling, provocative, and sometimes surreal elements. Her characters often challenge assumptions about what constitutes acceptable or normal human behaviour.
Convenience Store Woman was inspired in part by Murata's own experience working in convenience stores, a job she continued even after becoming a successful novelist.

The novel won the prestigious Akutagawa Prize in 2016 and became an international bestseller, introducing her work to readers around the world.
Her other notable works include Earthlings and Life Ceremony, both of which further explore social conventions, human relationships, and the boundaries between normality and deviance.
Through her fiction, Murata encourages readers to question the structures that shape our identities and to consider whether living authentically sometimes means refusing to conform.
