Join us for a coastal adventure around Thorney Island, a 15 km loop that blends quiet shoreline paths, sweeping harbour views, wildlife‑rich mudflats, and Longmere Point Beach. This moderate route is perfect for a rewarding outing.
We’ll set off from Southbourne, following the coastal path as it curves around the island’s edge. Expect constantly changing scenery — open water, salt‑marsh plants, long stretches of shoreline, and wide views across Chichester Harbour. Some overgrown paths. Around Pilsey Island, an RSPB reserve, keep an eye out for waders, seabirds, and the wildlife that thrives in the mudflats.
Along the way, we pass the 12th‑century St Nicholas Church, a small but atmospheric landmark that hints at the island’s long history. A significant portion of Thorney Island is Ministry of Defence (MOD) land. Walkers may be occasionally asked to show ID before being allowed through. We will remain strictly on the designated public coastal path at all times.
Longmere Point Beach is a quiet stretch of shoreline perfect for cooling off.
