You are invited to join a free one day meditation retreat on Sunday, November 8th hosted by the Salt River Mindfulness Meditation Community and led by meditation teacher Kai Newkirk.

Beginning at 10am and ending at 5:30pm, the day will include meditation instructions, periods of guided and silent sitting meditation, walking meditation and mindful movement, short wisdom talks, and question and answer periods.

Space is limited and registration is required to ensure we can accommodate everyone. Register at kainewkirk.org/mindfulnessmeditation.

These profound trainings of heart and mind, rooted in the teachings of the Buddha, are helping millions of people around the world live with greater freedom, peace, and joy while bringing compassionate love into action in their relationships and our world. They are secular-friendly and appropriate for people of any faith or no faith. A retreat is a precious opportunity for sustained, continuous practice that can enable great insight, peace, healing, openness, and inspiration.

The retreat will be held at a private residence in Tempe near McClintock and Broadway at 1908 El Parque Drive 85282. Please arrive between 9:40 and 10am.

Participants are encouraged to bring drink, a simple lunch, and any desired snacks to share. Water, tea, coffee, and light refreshments will be available. Participants are encouraged to bring their own cushion, mat, bench, or portable chair if they have a preferred meditation set up they wish to use for the retreat. For your convenience, chairs and cushions will be available for anyone who does not have their own, is unable to bring them, or prefers to use those provided.

All are welcome and this retreat is suitable for people with no experience as well as longtime practitioners. There is no cost to attend this retreat. It is offered freely and made possible by dana, or donations given in the practice of generosity.

Kai Newkirk, the retreat teacher, is a devoted practitioner and teacher of mindfulness meditation as well as a progressive leader and founder of For All, a center for nonviolent organizing to make America a Beloved Community. He began meditating seriously after a 2001 ten day Vipassana course and is a graduate of the Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program led by Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield. Kai founded the Salt River Mindfulness Meditation Community in January, 2025. He lives in Tempe, Arizona with his wife, immigrant rights leader, Erika Andiola, and their beloved dog Luna.

The Salt River Sangha aspires to grow a community that gives people free access to these powerful teachings, helps members to live with freedom, balance, and courageous love, and empowers us to serve our world skillfully in this difficult time.
