This time, we've chosen to focus on the filmography of Martin McDonagh. Some film critics have noted clear parallels between his films and the ideas of Antonin Artaud (violence, social shock, transgression, etc). We therefore suggest reading Artaud's The Theatre and Its Double and using its theoretical framework as a starting point for discussing McDonagh's films.

Artaud had an enormous influence on twentieth-century philosophy, particularly on thinkers such as Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, Jacques Derrida, Maurice Blanchot, Julia Kristeva, and Roland Barthes. Exploring his ideas could therefore serve as a starting point not only for a discussion about cinema but also for a broader philosophical conversation.

You don't have to watch all of McDonagh's films. Just keep in mind that the more films you watch, the more material we'll have to discuss. Reading Artaud's entire book is not mandatory either, but it would be preferable to familiarize yourself with his main theoretical ideas. Reading 20–30 pages should be enough for this purpose.

If you think there are more suitable philosophical frameworks for discussing McDonagh's filmography, feel free to bring along other readings and share your ideas with us!

The format of the meeting will be more relaxed and informal. For now, we're planning to meet at Vego and spend a couple of hours there. However, if we find a more suitable venue, we'll move the meeting.
Also, keep in mind that the Cinémathèque is showing a retrospective of Martin McDonagh's films throughout November!
