For our inaugural meeting, we'll discuss The Destruction of Black Civilization: Great Issues of a Race from 4500 B.C. to 2000 A.D. by Chancellor Williams, a landmark work in Pan-African thought. In this book, Williams explores the rise of African civilisations, the richness of precolonial societies and the historical forces that shaped the continent. Challenging the idea that African history begins with slavery or colonialism, he invites us to engage with a much longer and more complex story. To get the most out of our discussion, we encourage everyone to read the book beforehand. However, if you haven't finished it, you are still very welcome to join us.
