Join members and friends of the Lancaster Bicycle Club and Rails for Trails for a bike ride through the abandoned tunnels of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. When the turnpike was expanded to go over the mountain at Breezewood, three tunnels and a plaza were abandoned. The trail is 10 miles long and flat.
From Lancaster
We will meet together, leaving the parking lot of Walmart, the 222 Ephrata exit on Saturday morning, November 21st at 8am. Use Meet Up comments to make arrangements and please carpool. We will drive North one exit on 222, getting on the Turnpike and driving West to the Breezwood exit. This is a 1 and ½ hour drive. After getting off the turnpike we will meet re-group at the exit at Scheetz.
From Maryland
Drive directly to the in intersection of Rt. 30 and the Pa Turnpike exit at Breezwood. Everyone meeting at Sheetz at 10am.
The entrance to the trail is 1/2 mile away, route 30 and Tannery Road.
Caution
-since 1968 the trail has been abandoned. It is mostly gravel now.
-no road bikes…
-there are no lights in these tunnels. You must have bright front lights on you bicycles.
-one tunnel is 1 ½ mile long, completely dark.
After returning to Breezwood, we will hang out and eat together at Bob Evan’s. Each rider will wear a helmet and have a tube for you or someone to fix.
