Rocky Butte is an extinct cinder cone volcano located along the I-205 corridor and the I-84 interchange.

Take some time to look at this website, particularly the Creating a New Park page.
We'll start at Glenhaven Park on NE 82nd adjacent to McDaniel High School. Park on NE Siskiyou and meet at the parking lot sign.
We'll walk through the Dharma Rain Zen Center and Bird Alliance properties, then up Rocky Butte Road.
There is a reasonably wide shoulder most of the way. At times, you will be walking on the road. It is also a bit unsafe going through the tunnel.
Brightly colored clothes are encouraged.Traffic should be light mid-morning.
Nice views of the river can be had from Joseph Wood Hill Park at the top. We'll come back down on the north side and work our way through the neighborhood to the Grotto.

We'll return to Glenhaven Park from there.
