Van Gogh in His Own Words - Selected Letters

Vincent van Gogh is one of the world's most recognizable artists, but what was he like beyond his paintings and the stories we know about his life?
For this meeting, we'll explore a selection of his personal letters, which offer fascinating glimpses into his thoughts on art, life, relationships, ambition, and the world around him. We'll discuss what the letters reveal about the man behind the paintings, what surprised us, and how his words might change our understanding of him or even someone else.
No knowledge of art or art history is needed.

The Letters

Below are ten letters offering different glimpses into Van Gogh's life and personality. Feel free to browse and choose two or three that catch your interest. And if you find yourself drawn into his world, read as many as you like!

(If you need to change the language of the letter, you can do it from the bottom right of the screen)

1. Letter 17 - Find things beautiful.
2. Letter 27 - There is no such things as an old woman!
3. Letter 155 - One’s native country is everywhere.
4. Letter 158 - First pain, then joy afterwards.
5. Letter 215 - Become a painter.
6. Letter 245 - Serenity in spite of everything.
7. Letter 497 - The potato eaters.
8. Letter 537 - Tulip mania may have perished, BULB-GROWING REMAINS.
9. Letter 691 - What is the religion of the future likely to be?
10. Letter 720 - One can speak poetry just by arranging colours well.

Content Note: Van Gogh's letters are often beautiful and moving, but they also offer an unfiltered glimpse into the life of someone who experienced considerable personal and mental health struggles. Some readers may find aspects of his story emotionally difficult. Please use your own judgment in choosing what to read.

Looking forward to seeing you there and having another wonderful discussion!
