AI can help us write, solve problems, and even talk through difficult feelings. But what happens to our own skills and relationships when we use it regularly? At our next Psychology in Action meeting, we’ll explore what the research suggests so far, and what remains uncertain.
Suggested preparation:
1. Listen to the Speaking of Psychology podcast episode “AI ‘de-skilling’: What happens when we offload our work to AI?” OR read the Monitor on Psychology article “How AI is reshaping human skills and thinking.”
2. Read the Monitor on Psychology article “AI chatbots and digital companions are reshaping emotional connection.”
We’re trying a more structured format this time. We’ll spend a set period on each area of discussion (below) before moving to the next, so we can explore each in some depth. I’ll also help manage speaking turns to make room for different voices; when several people want to contribute, I may invite someone who hasn’t spoken yet before returning to those who have. There’s no pressure to speak, and we’ll leave time at the end for open discussion and questions we didn’t get to along the way.
We’ll organize the discussion into three parts:
1. Our experiences: How are we using AI for work, learning, and emotional support? What changes (if any) have we noticed in how we think or relate to others?
2. What the research suggests: What effects have studies found, and under what conditions? Might the effects differ for novices and experts, or when AI challenges us rather than simply provides answers? What do we still need to learn from the research?
3. What we want going forward: Which abilities and relationships do we want to develop and preserve? What might an approach to AI look like that supports autonomy, competence, and human connection?
Preparation is encouraged, though not required to attend. These resources will give us a shared starting point for examining what the research suggests, where the evidence is limited, and how it compares with our own experiences. Taking a little time with them beforehand will help us have a richer discussion and give you more to take away from it.
A quick reminder: If your plans change and you're no longer able to attend, please update your RSVP as soon as possible so that someone on the waitlist has the opportunity to join us. Thank you.
