What Is a White Elephant Gift Exchange?

A White Elephant game is a fun alternative to Secret Santa. Instead of drawing a specific person and buying a gift for them, everyone brings one wrapped, unmarked gift to add to a shared gift pile.

Here’s how it works:

1. Budget $25–$50 per gift. Gifts can be funny, useful, quirky, or desirable.
2. Everyone brings one wrapped gift without putting any name on it.
3. Everyone draws numbers to determine the order of play.
4. Player 1 chooses a gift from the pile and opens it.
5. Player 2 can either open a new gift or steal Player 1’s opened gift. If a gift is stolen, the person who lost it gets to choose another gift.
6. We continue until everyone has a gift. To keep things moving, Colleen may set a rule that each gift can only be stolen 2 times.
7. At the end, everyone goes home with the gift they’re holding.

Secret Santa vs. White Elephant

With Secret Santa, you shop for a particular person. With White Elephant, you never know which gift you'll end up with—and the stealing and swapping are all part of the fun!
