Welcome to our philosophy gathering. We’re really glad you’re here. We’re meeting because we believe that asking deep questions is part of what it means to be human, questions about meaning, truth, morality, freedom, and how we ought to live. Our hope is to create a space that feels thoughtful but relaxed, serious but welcoming, a place where curiosity is encouraged, disagreement is respectful, and no one feels pressure to have everything figured out.
For this week’s discussion, we’ll read a book chapter called ‘The Meanings Of Life’ by David Schmidtz. You can access the chapter here. Schmidtz explores what makes life meaningful. Rather than offering one definitive answer, he reflects on the role of relationships, personal choices, and the impact we have on others. He also considers whether life needs a greater purpose to be meaningful, and how we can find meaning in the everyday lives we already live.
As always, the goal is not to arrive at final answers, but to think carefully together and learn from each other’s perspectives.
