Anticipated Weather on Hike Day
This is anticipated to be a 3.1 mile hike. There is a limited requirement to be able to ford a stream, and possess the ability to recognize toxic plants, negotiate rocks, roots, fallen trees, damp trail conditions, stairs, steep ascents, vines, low hanging branches, culverts, uncertain footing on hills, reptiles, spider webs, scorpions, and birds of prey as only a short part of the hike is on the North Bank Trail.
Meet at the parking area on Shields Lake Dr. (just north of the Maymont Nature Center) and take a leisurely hike through part of Byrd Park and the Randolph neighborhood. We'll pass Swan Lake then follow Lakeview Ave, Allen Ave & Idlewood Ave to Randolph Street. Randolph will take us into Riverside Cemetery at which point we'll access the North Bank Trail. Eventually we'll turn for home on Hampton Street which will take us to the Maymont Nature Center and our starting point.
If you are unfamiliar with the meet up location and parking availability, add a few minutes to your travel schedule so you can find us.
If you don't have a clue about the location of Shields Lake, click on the arrow located just above "How to Find Us" in the event description. An interactive map will be displayed and when "Directions" (left) is selected the best route from your current location to the Meet Up rendezvous spot will be calculated for you. Before the hike be sure to place anything that might invite theft in your trunk before you leave your car parked while you are hiking.
Participants should be able to maintain a pace of 2.5 miles per hour. The parking area we will use is readily identifiable and you should have no trouble locating it. You have probably passed it many times. This is a dog friendly hike.
