Bonjour Lyon! Excited to visit this fascinating & beautiful 2nd capital city of France. The definition of French gastronomy, elegance and beauty, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, scenic architecture, getting dressed up for Christmas! Sounds like fun!
Indicative itinerary :
Saturday, 28th November : Arrival & meet-up at the hotel with all group members. Off we go to Vieux Lyon (Old Town), down the hill into the Renaissance district. Admire the astronomical clock inside the Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste. Spend the rest of the afternoon hunting for traboules—secret covered passageways built by Renaissance merchants and later used by silk workers.
Time for a traditional Bouchon dinner at an authenticated, traditional bouchon. Sample local culinary staples like quenelles (creamy pike dumplings), salade lyonnaise, and a slice of pink praline tart for dessert.
Sunday, 29th November : Optional free & tip based walking tour with a local guide to discover the gems and secrets of Lyon.
Take the historic funicular railway up Fourvière Hill. Step inside the stunning 19th-century Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière for panoramic views of the city.
Lunch: Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse. Head east to this legendary covered food market. It is a paradise of local cheeses, cured meats, pastries, and oysters, making the perfect place for lunch.
Croix-Rousse District. Head up to Lyon's second hill, historically the vibrant centre of the 19th-century silk weaving industry. Explore the historic Cour des Voraces traboule and view the monumental Mur des Canuts mural, which honors the heritage of the city's silk workers. Don't forget to grab a praline brioche along the way.
Monday 30th November :Taking an optional day trip to magnificent Annecy, Experience the historic centre and the iconic lake. Known as the "Venice of the Alps," this compact city blends medieval history with dramatic alpine views, also known as the "Venice of the Alps" for its winding canals and pastel medieval houses!
Tuesday, 1st December : Making the most of the day before the departure flight, try book an evening one as there is much more to see. The Confluence District. Hop on the tram south to the Confluence, where the Rhône and Saône rivers meet. The area has been transformed from an industrial port into an eco-district of futuristic architecture. Visit the striking, spaceship-like Musée des Confluences to explore its unique science and anthropology exhibitions.
Riverside Drinks. End the trip like a local by enjoying a glass of regional Côtes du Rhône wine at one of the lively barge-cafés (péniches) moored permanently along the Rhône riverbanks
