FREE HIKE – Seven Sisters: The Edge of the Island – Scenic October Coastline

October transforms the Seven Sisters — sharper light, stronger winds, deeper colours, and a coastline that feels far more alive than in the summer months. This is one of the best times of the year to take on or revisit this iconic route, and as part of our annual Seven Sisters series, this October edition is one you don’t want to miss. 📍 Meeting Point Meet outside Seaford Station — 10:15 AM for a Sharp 10:30 AM start. We will finish by 6pm at Eastbourne Station. You need to buy a return from Eastbourne Station. ⏳ Distance & Difficulty Approx. 13–15 miles Moderate to Challenging — linear hike This is a long‑distance, hilly route with continuous ups and downs, including the full sequence of the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs. A good level of fitness is required. We begin outside Seaford Station and finish at Eastbourne Station. 🎯 Hike Overview When we set off, you’ll see Seaford’s Martello Tower, the westernmost of a defensive chain built during the Napoleonic era. It’s part of a line of over 100 towers stretching all the way to Suffolk — a reminder that this peaceful coastline once stood on high alert. Today it houses a small local history museum. This route is one of the most dramatic coastal walks in the UK. We move through Cuckmere Haven and onto the Seven Sisters — a series of steep chalk ridges shaped by ancient meltwater and later carved by relentless sea erosion. From a distance, you may only see six peaks, but the landscape hides one from view; in total, you’ll cross eight distinct rises between Cuckmere Haven and Birling Gap. The classic “sisters” include: Haven Brow, Short Brow, Rough Brow, Brass Point, Flagstaff Point, Flat Hill, Bailey’s Hill, Went Hill Brow. One of these is traditionally excluded from the official seven — but you’ll walk all of them. Expect: sweeping sea views dramatic cliff edges open countryside sections of the South Downs Way a coastline that is actively changing every year 🏛️ Birling Gap & Coastal History Our lunch stop is at Birling Gap Café, with facilities and sea views. Birling Gap itself is a natural break between the cliffs, now managed by the National Trust. The erosion here is striking — the cliff retreats by up to a metre each year. Old photographs show a long row of coastguard cottages that once stood safely inland; today only a couple remain, perched dangerously close to the edge. Further along the route stands Belle Tout, the old clifftop lighthouse. Its original position proved flawed — fog often hid the light, and the cliff blocked visibility for ships sailing too close. After being replaced by the Beachy Head lighthouse in 1902, Belle Tout lived several lives: tea room, wartime casualty, council restoration project, private home. In 1999, engineers moved the entire building 17 metres inland to save it from collapse. It now operates as a unique bed and breakfast with panoramic views. While a bit ahead the Beachy Head Lighthouse is the red‑and‑white tower standing at the base of the cliffs below Beachy Head.
