Join our discord: https://discord.gg/sXmd8MRvmr We size people up in seconds — before they've finished a sentence, sometimes before they've said a word. It's automatic, it's fast, and we can't turn it off. Sometimes those snap judgments are eerily accurate; sometimes they're completely wrong, and we only find out much later. And of course it runs both ways: while we're reading someone, they're reading us, and we rarely know what they're seeing. Tonight is about both sides of that first glance — the impressions we form, and the ones we leave. 1. Think of one of your closest friends today. What was your very first impression of them — and how close was it to who they turned out to be? 2. What do you tend to notice first about a person? A handshake, their eyes, how they treat the waiter? 3. Have you ever been completely wrong about someone — someone you wrote off who became important to you, or someone you instantly liked who let you down? 4. Do you trust your gut about people? Has it gotten better with age, or do you still get fooled? 5. What kind of first impression do you think you make? Have you ever been surprised to learn how you came across? 6. Have you ever been badly misread — someone took you as unfriendly when you were shy, or arrogant when you were nervous? Did you ever get to correct it? 7. Do you act differently when meeting someone new — a "meeting people" version of yourself? Is that being polite or being fake? 8. Where do you think your snap judgments come from — experience, upbringing, old stereotypes? Have you ever caught one you weren't proud of? 9. How long does it take to really know someone? Is there a moment when the first impression finally gets replaced by the real person? 10. Has anyone ever given you a second chance after a terrible first impression — or have you given one? How did it change things? 11. Job interviews, first dates, meeting the in-laws — in high-stakes situations, do first impressions count too much? Have you ever won or lost something in the first five minutes? 12. If people could know one true thing about you before forming any impression at all, what would you want it to be? These are just some of the questions we will discuss during our meetup. No preparation needed, just bring yourself and a willingness to listen and share your thoughts. The meetup will be structured in a way to promote small group discussion so everyone has a chance to listen, be heard, and really dive into the discussion. - - - - - How our discussions work Each meetup has a clear topic and guiding questions. We stay with them so everyone gets the conversation they came for. This is a reflective discussion, not a debate. The focus is understanding and exploration rather than persuasion or winning an argument. We speak from personal experience. Sharing is encouraged; judging, correcting, or speaking over others isn’t. We move one question at a time. Related thoughts are welcome when they support the question we’re exploring. We share the space. Everyone has a chance to speak, and no one is expected to dominate or perform. We listen generously. Curiosity, presence, and openness matter more than certainty. This is a non-political, non-outrage space. The emphasis is on reflection and connection, not debate or escalation. We'll arrange tables of 6 participants each. When you arrive, please gather at the main atrium - we'll be at the tables between big windows and the palm trees. Once enough people are assembled, I'll escort each group of 6 to their table to begin the discussion, and continue doing this as more participants arrive. Each table will receive a sheet containing the topic description and discussion questions. Feel free to take a photo or refer to the event page to have your own copy handy. The official event time is from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, but some of us stay longer, transitioning into informal conversations beyond the topic. You're welcome to join any other ongoing discussions once your initial group wraps up and members start leaving.
