ABOUT THE VENUES:
MELROSE UMBRELLA CO. ☂️
Melrose Umbrella Co. is a unique post-Prohibition craft cocktail lounge that blends a historic, neighborhood-friendly feel with an eccentric, vintage aesthetic and an innovative beverage program.

In the early stages of development, owners Zach Patterson & Austin Melrose (childhood friends) sought to create a nostalgic environment whilst celebrating the return of the craft cocktail, to one of the most diverse shopping and dining avenues in the world- Melrose Avenue.
Umbrella Hospitality Group is proud to present a bar program featuring distinctive cocktails made from home-made tinctures, syrups, and tonics as well as natural wines, non-alcoholic cocktails and beer selections. They created a timeless and unique menu offering a variety of palates reflecting belief in unique pairings, custom infusions, fresh juices and ingredients.
Through the keen eye of M. Winter Designs, salvaged treasures from across the United States create added warmth and intimacy to the 1890’s fireplace facing an arched ceiling covered in New York City subway tile, complementing the massive 1920’s wooden apothecary cabinet shipped from the East Coast that is now the custom retrofitted back bar.
HISTORY
The Melrose Umbrella Co. logo is a silhouette of, then, 90-year old James Melrose, which was published in an English newspaper after serving his elected position as Lord Mayor of York, England.
In addition to the magnificent life he led, Mr. Melrose became forever known as the ’Grand Old Man’ to his constituency and even to the Queen of England. Found within the Umbrella Co. is a photograph of one of the many occasions the two were documented together while wielding his umbrella which he carried as opposed to a cane, until his expiration at the ripe old age of 101.
BUILDING
The building in which the Melrose Umbrella Co. is housed was built in the midst of the excitement of the demise of prohibition, after the 18th amendment was lifted via ratification of the 21st amendment. Making it the only instance in U.S. history that a constitutional amendment was retracted.
The iconic image that marked this momentous celebration was an umbrella with raindrops falling from the inside representing the promise of, Many Wet Days To Come…
Key Unique Features
• The Name and Symbolism: The bar is named after a nod to co-owner Austin Melrose’s ancestor, James Melrose, a turn-of-the-century nobleman famously silhouetted holding an umbrella. The umbrella also symbolizes the post-Prohibition era—signaling "many wet days to come" where patrons could finally buy drinks again. Thirteen hanging umbrellas on the wall represent the 13 dry years of Prohibition.
• Old-World, Apothecary Design: Created with salvaged treasures from across the U.S., the interior features an 1890s fireplace, an arched ceiling covered in New York City subway tile, and a massive 1920s wooden apothecary back bar that requires a sliding ladder for bartenders.
• Dedicated Old Fashioned Bar: Alongside the main bar, the space includes a separate, specialized secondary bar dedicated strictly to crafting unique house variations of the classic Old Fashioned.
• Day-to-Night Transition: The venue doubles as a daytime coffee and pastry workspace with Wi-Fi before seamlessly transitioning into a bustling, candlelit evening cocktail destination.
• Connected Taquería (Umbrella TaCo): The bar connects directly to an adjacent concept, Umbrella Taco, which pairs high-end pan-Mexican street food and handmade tortillas with the bar's craft libations.
Lorena’s love for airline vintage memorabilia & Tiki
When PS Air Bar, a super popular, aviation-themed speakeasy in Palm Springs closed this past January I was truly heartbroken. Years prior the 94th Aero Squadron in Van Nuys closed too. There’s only a couple other aviation-themed restaurants in California; like the Proud Bird at LAX. But no other retro, mid-century airline-themed cocktail lounge like the ULTRA-COOL vibe PS Air Bar was. Not until now!!
Gloria discovered AVIATOR and knew I would love it. You will too!! They opened last year. There’s no affiliation to PS AIR but the decor and retro-vibe is very similar. I’m super excited there’s now an aviation-themed bar like this here in LA. I spent three decades working for the airlines and have collected a lot of airline vintage memorabilia and Tiki decor over the years. I made my own pool house at home into a cocktail lounge with this retro-vibe I love so much!!

• The Service: Staff members dress in retro flight attendant and captain uniforms, and menus are styled to look like little international passports.
