We tried this in September and got rained out, but there is one more bike train this year and it’ll be during fall foliage. This trip will be in conjunction with Ladies Who Shred Mountain Bike club.
Bring your bicycle (or rent one there) and step back in time for a ride through the stunning Lehigh Gorge on the scenic railway from the historic village of Jim Thorpe up to Whitehaven. We’ll disembark there and pedal at our own pace on the partly paved - partly crushed gravel, car-free, D&L trail back to Jim Thorpe. It’s 25 miles at a gentle 2% downgrade and most people do it in 2.5 - 3 hours. We’ll pedal past waterfalls with the Lehigh River below us where we’ll be able to see rafters and kayakers running the river. We’ll stop along the way for lunch and snacks.
Train Tickets: $39 if you have your own bike, $66 if you want to rent a bike and helmet. The bike train is popular, so reserve early. You must reserve by phone with a credit card at
570-325-8485
Parking: $25 at the municipal lot next to the train station. There is some free parking on the streets and there are other commercial lots. It’s crowded on the weekends, so arrive early. The train waits for no one. Be ready to board at nine.
Helmets: mandatory
E-bikes: must comply with Pennsylvania laws
Restrooms: Midway at Rockport
Bridge: we’ll bike over a high bridge. It has both wooden rails and a mesh metal fence.
What to bring: Water, food, helmet, jacket, gloves. It may be cold weather.
Afterwards we can stroll around Jim Thorpe. It’s very quaint with lots of shops and cafes.
See you on your wheels!
