HYBRID: The Rice Space Institute will hold a Space Frontiers Lecture featuring Physics & Astronomy Professor Megan Reiter, Ph.D., in a talk titled "Understanding the Formation of Planets from the Outside In."
Description: "Thousands of planets have been found orbiting stars other than the Sun but most of those planets don't like the planets in our solar system. Why? Half the answer lies in the processes that happen inside the disks of gas and dust where planets form. In this talk, we'll talk about the other half -- the influence of the environment where at least half of stars are born (and similar to the environment where the solar system formed). We'll discuss our growing understanding of how bigger, brighter sibling stars can boil off the planet-forming disks from the outside-in, reducing the time and materials to form planets and why this might still be the for an Earth-planet to grow up,"
The lecture will be held at Rice University's Keck Hall, Room 100.
There will be a reception starting at 6:30 PM at Valhalla (outside Keck Hall), while the lecture itself will begin at 7:00 PM
