This morning we will tour Savannah one of the world’s 22 great cities from the book “Design of Cities.” “It is amazing that a colony, struggling against the most elemental problems of survival in a wilderness, should be able to produce a plan so exalted that it remains as one of the finest diagrams for city organization and growth in existence.” General James Ogelthorpe and his settlers founded Savannah. England’s 13th and last colony, in February 1733. Forgoing the usual grid system, Ogelthorpe and Col. William Bull laid out their new settlement in a series of wards in which commercial and residential buildings centered on a public square. This visionary plan has survived as the city’s blueprint because of Ogelthorp’s choice of location. Tour Highlights will include River Street, the Cotton Exchange Market and scenes from the movie “In the Garden of Good and Evil” including the Cemetery.
The house tour will be followed by a tour of the squares (including Forsyth) and the Bonaventure Cemetery from “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil with optional lunch at Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House.
