Abstract: Explore how concurrency in Java evolved from early Thread and Runnable basics to java.util.concurrent and modern virtual threads. Compare the key ways to implement execution from raw threads and ExecutorService pools to asynchronous futures and lightweight virtual threads. Walk away with clear guidelines and practical trade-offs so you can choose the right threading model for your workload. Speaker Lesedi Jonas is a software developer at BBD. But what happens when the compiler can understand intent directly? This talk explores an experimental framework where developers write .prompt files instead of .java files, allowing software to be built from natural language descriptions rather than hand-written code. Through live demos, I'll show how the system works, the engineering challenges involved in making it reliable, and what this shift could mean for the future of software development. Speaker Batandwa Mgutsi is a Software Engineer at BBD, where he builds enterprise software for the financial services industry using technologies including Java, Spring Boot, .NET, Azure and Kubernetes. He is also a developer community organiser and co-organiser of JoziJUG, JoziJs, and GDG Johannesburg passionate about sharing practical engineering knowledge. His interests span software engineering, AI, developer tooling and building technology with clear intent and purpose.
