Sally Potter's adaptation of Virginia Woolf's queer classic Orlando is arguably still the signature film for Tilda Swinton, who made her breakthrough playing the androgynous titular character, and it's a movie that could only have been made by a female director (hard to explain in a paragraph but you'll get it when you see it). It's playful, heartfelt, sexy and, most of all, genuinely beautiful. Less importantly, it's my favourite film.
So, the plot: pretty young nobleman Orlando is bequeathed lands by the first Queen Elizabeth (played here by Quentin Crisp) on her deathbed, on the condition he does not age, nor wither. And so it transpires, with Orlando living through the centuries and occasionally changing sex. As you do.
