Forbidden! is believed to be the world's first coming-out play, written by Dutch playwright Jo M. van IJssel de Schepper-Becker and originally performed in Rotterdam in 1922 — where it was cancelled after just two performances due to hostile public reaction. Over a century later, it's making its US premiere right here in Wilton Manors. The play is set within the seemingly respectable home of an upper-middle-class family, where long-buried truths surface as one son's hidden life forces those around him to confront their prejudices, fears, and capacity for acceptance. It's powerful, it's historically significant, and it hits close to home in the best possible way.
