Date: Wednesday, 17 February 2027 Starting Point: Te Anau (departure point TBC — likely Te Anau i-SITE / shuttle pickup) Distance: ~11 km (walk option) / 0 km (cruise option) Elevation Gain: Negligible — Milford Track day section is flat Duration: Full day (approx. 7am–7pm including transport) Difficulty: Easy (1/5 — the walk is flat and well-graded)

Event Description
Between Hump Ridge (13–15 Feb) and Routeburn (18–20 Feb), we have two days based in Te Anau — and on the second of those, we're heading into Milford Sound. We couldn't get Milford Track bookings this season, but that doesn't mean we miss out: we're putting together a day at Piopiotahi / Milford Sound with two options so everyone gets what they want.
We'll travel together from Te Anau to Milford Sound by shuttle (around 2 hours each way through some of the most dramatic road scenery in the country — keep your camera ready for the Eglinton Valley, Mirror Lakes, and the Homer Tunnel). At Milford Sound foreshore, the group splits:

Option A — Day Walk on the Milford Track (from Sandfly Point) Water taxi across to Sandfly Point, the official end of the Milford Track, then walk the final section in reverse: a flat, beautifully maintained 11 km return through ancient rainforest along the Arthur River, with swing bridges and waterfall views including Giant Gate Falls. You'll be walking the path Milford Track trampers finish on, without the four-day commitment. Water taxi back to the foreshore when finished.

Option B — Milford Sound Cruise A nature cruise on Milford Sound itself — towering cliffs, waterfalls plunging straight into the fiord, fur seals on Seal Rock, and Mitre Peak rising 1,692 m straight from the water. Cruise duration TBC depending on operator and timing.
Both groups regroup at the Milford Sound foreshore for the shuttle back to Te Anau.

Note: This is a logistics-heavy day with three booked components (shuttle, water taxi, cruise). We'll coordinate group bookings closer to the date — please confirm which option you want as early as possible so we can lock in numbers.

What to Bring
Gear

Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots (walk option) / comfortable shoes (cruise option)
Weather-appropriate clothing (layers, waterproof jacket — Fiordland gets rain ~182 days a year)
Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
Strong insect repellent — Sandfly Point is named for a reason
Day pack with rain cover

Food and Hydration

At least 2 litres of water
Lunch and snacks for the day (food and drink options also available at Milford Sound foreshore)
Cash/card for coffee or extras

Important Notes

Your safety is your responsibility.
This is a coordinated group day — please confirm your option (walk or cruise) early so we can book accurately.
Costs will include shuttle, plus either water taxi (walk option) or cruise ticket (cruise option). Approximate figures TBC closer to the date.

Between two of New Zealand's finest Great Walks, this is your chance to experience Milford Sound itself — on foot, on the water, or both perspectives shared between the group. See you in Te Anau!
