Jung’s The Red Book: Reading and Discussion Group

UPDATED:
Reading assignment for 2nd meetup:
From Liber Primus:
Complete all chapters in Liber Primus.

I will be reading from A Reader's Edition (see below)

This meetup is devoted to the careful reading and discussion of C. G. Jung’s extraordinary The Red Book (Liber Novus), one of the most important and fascinating works in the history of depth psychology.
(note: reading is required for participation. You may attend if you do not read, yet only listen).

The Red Book emerged from a period of profound psychological and spiritual confrontation with the unconscious that began after Jung’s break with Freud.

Before creating The Red Book, Jung recorded many of his dreams, visions, fantasies, and inner dialogues in a series of notebooks now known as The Black Books (1913-1916). These notebooks served as the more immediate and spontaneous record of his encounters with the unconscious.

Jung later selected, developed, reflected upon, and artistically transformed much of this material into The Red Book, which he composed as a richly illuminated manuscript.

Together, we will explore Jung’s encounters with the unconscious and consider major themes such as individuation, the Shadow, anima and animus, the Self, myth, symbolism, religion, active imagination, and the relationship between consciousness (Ego) and the unconscious (Self).

Experts, longtime students of Jung, and complete newcomers are all warmly welcome.

No previous knowledge of Jungian psychology is required.

The purpose of the group is not to arrive at a single interpretation, but to create an open and thoughtful conversation in which participants can share questions, insights, associations, and differing perspectives.

When possible, we will meet weekly and proceed through the text at a manageable pace.

Participants may use either of the following editions (free PDF below)

1. The Red Book: Liber Novus — Full Facsimile Edition
(too expensive, yet has the amazing pictorials that Jung painted)

C.G. Jung - The Red Book

2. The Red Book: Liber Novus — A Reader’s Edition
(this is the edition I will use for reading assignments)

The Red Book: A Readers Edition
