Austin Staples: Mount Bonnell and Kerbey Lane Cafe!

This is stop 9 of the Austin Staples series where we visit things that make Austin what it is. These events will focus on visiting places that have been established for a long time and help keep Austin weird.

It’s no secret that Austin is teeming with various scenic spots. Some are better known than others, and one of the most notable ones is Mt. Bonnell. Overlooking the Colorado River, this lookout gives a beautiful vantage point of the Texas Hill Country.

Sunset is supposed to be around 5:30 on November 21st, so we will meet that the base of the mountain by the sign at 5:00 and start ascending at 5:10 (might be earlier if the sun is setting quickly, I’ll post in the event comments when we start climbing). I’m using the word “hike” very loosely because the ascent is around 100 stone stairs with a dirt path going down. This trail is not difficult at all. We’ll climb to the top, take in the sunset, and then go to the original Kerbey Lane (3704 Kerbey Ln) for refreshments. It’s about a 7 minute drive between both places.
