Bear Peak Canyon is an 8.4-mile lollipop loop that makes up for lack of altitude with +2800' of elevation gain. The hike starts from the NCAR Mesa building, with plentiful parking. The lollipop stick is around 1 1/4 miles over rolling terrain. The loop leads to the Fern Canyon trail, which slopes upward through the trees, over step-like rocks.
After reaching the peak, we'll likely take a well-deserved break and enjoy the panoramic view. Those who care to can scale to the top, before we continue down the other side of the mountain. The trail is largely downhill from there.
Dogs on leash are welcome. I'm bringing mine. You do need to clean up after your dog, as necessary.
