Cave Exploring at Friskas Urd
Join us for an adventurous day trip to Friskas Urd, a fascinating natural boulder cave system near Lake Hällungen in Ödsmål. Our main goal is to explore the cave system itself. Huge moss-covered rocks form a maze of openings, cracks and passages. We’ll take our time searching for the caves, exploring seeing how much of the system we can discover. We’ll also look for a hidden geocache in the cave GeoCahce GCXXHF and, if time, we also go to the top of the hill for a view over the lake.

The hike and exploration
Hiking distance: approximately 8 km round trip, including a forest section with no path but it is not that long.
We’ll also head towards the hilltop for a good view over the lake.
The forest section may be uneven, steep and difficult to navigate, and finding the cave entrances could take extra time

Return journey
We plan to take the train in Svenshögen at 16:29, connecting via Stenungsund back to Gothenburg.
We’ll aim to leave the cave area with enough time to walk back to the station without rushing.
🪨 What to expect
Exploring a natural boulder cave system with multiple openings and passages
Searching through rocky terrain and forest to find the caves
Geocaching at the nearby Slottsberget cache
A possible climb towards a viewpoint overlooking Lake Hällungen
The cave system is reported to have around 40 metres of passages in total, spread across different sections. We may not find or explore every passage, and there’s no guarantee that every opening will be accessible.
⚠️ Cave Safety & Important Information
Friskas Urd is a natural boulder cave system, not a maintained tourist cave. Exploring it involves risks, including:
Unstable rocks: Large boulders may shift, and loose stones can fall.
Slippery surfaces: Rocks, mud and leaves can be wet and slippery.
Narrow passages: Some openings may require crawling or squeezing through tight spaces. There may be sharp edges, low ceilings and places where turning around is difficult.
Darkness: Cave passages can be completely dark. Bring your own headlamp or flashlight, ideally with spare batteries.
Wildlife: Spiders and other small creatures may be present in cracks and sheltered areas.
Please explore the cave within your own abilities and comfort level.
🎒 What to bring
Sturdy hiking shoes or boots with good grip
Weather-appropriate outdoor clothing
A headlamp or flashlight — mandatory
Water and snacks
A packed lunch
Clothes you don’t mind getting dirty
Optional: gloves, knee pads
Late October can be cold, wet and slippery. Bring warm layers and rain protection, and expect to get muddy while exploring.
👥 Group size
We’ll limit the group to 8 participants so we can explore together safely and keep the group manageable in the rocky terrain.
