Something From Nothing

SOMETHING FROM NOTHING VOL. 2

WHAT ARE WE BECOMING?

Indonesia is going through a difficult time. Our forests are disappearing, communities are being displaced, and the distance between those in power and the people they represent seems to grow wider. We are surrounded by information, opinions, and endless noise, yet finding the truth and understanding one another feels increasingly difficult.

There is anger, grief, confusion, and uncertainty. But there is also a desire to understand, to connect, and to imagine a different future.

Something From Nothing returns for its second volume, bringing together poets and musicians for an intimate evening of spoken word, live ambient music, food, and collective reflection.

The orangutan, our silent witness, stands at the centre of this gathering. A reminder of our relationship with nature, the consequences of our actions, and the uncomfortable question of what we are becoming.

We don’t believe one evening of poetry will change the world. But throughout history, words have challenged power, inspired movements, preserved memories, and shaped the way we see ourselves and one another.

This evening, we are also joined by Ibu Alexa, a cook born and raised in Makassar, South Sulawesi, who will be sharing her cooking with us. Food, like poetry, carries stories of where we come from, the people who shaped us, and the cultures we carry forward. Through her food, we bring another form of storytelling to the table, reminding us that connection can begin with something as simple as sharing a meal.

This evening is an invitation to speak freely, to listen deeply, to share food, and to confront the realities of our time through different voices and perspectives.

Because before we can imagine a different future, perhaps we must first ask ourselves what we are becoming.
