Come along to Museum of the Home to celebrate the opening of our new room display of A High-rise Flat in 2008, which highlights months of community research documenting trans stories, lives and homes in 2000s East London.

Our day to night, community-led programme celebrates how East London has and still is providing home to the trans+ community.

Join us for trans+ 2000s themed screenings curated and hosted by TGirlsOnFilm, trans+ poetry readings from the 2000s and today, a trans+ artists and makers market, a panel talk led by Trans Action for Housing Justice to raise awareness about the issues faced by trans+ people today, and a cabaret celebrating the trans+ (and fabulous) performers who’ve made East London a home for the LGBTQI+ community.

Please note: tickets include general entry to the event day. Entry to individual programmes throughout the day are offered on a first come, first serve basis based on the capacity of the room.

Full Programme

A High-Rise Flat in 2008 with the Trans+ Community Researchers

12pm – 9pm | Rooms Through Time

Come and see the new permanent period room display celebrating trans+ homes in 2000s East London.

This display is a culmination of a 2 year-long community-led trans history project, where a cohort of 8 researchers have curated a permanent redisplay of our 2000s period room focusing on local trans stories of home and domesticity.

The community researchers who have co-curated the space will be in the room throughout the afternoon. Drop-in to learn more about the process!

Trans Housing Today: Lived Experiences and Campaigning for Community Alternatives

2.30pm – 3.30pm

Join us for a panel responding to the exhibition’s historical insights and how trans people today reflect on their own experiences of home through the representations of the 2000s room.

With speakers from organisations such as Trans Action for Housing Justice and The Outside Project, we will discuss how housing in London suits trans needs and how we can fight for alternatives that represent what home means for trans and gender non-conforming people. The panel will end with time for questions, and include opportunities for audiences to reflect on their own experiences of home through written exercises.

Poetry Readings with Gayathiri Kamalakanthan, Danni Spooner and open mic session

5pm – 6pm

Join a Poetry hour with Gayathiri Kamalakanthan and Danni Spooner.

There will also be an open-mic section with a sign-up sheet. Each performer will have 3 minutes and names will be picked out of a hat at random. If you’ve ever wanted to try a poem or a little fragment in a welcoming, low-stakes environment, this is for you!
