BOOK LAUNCH Listening Like A Girl by Juliana Gleeson.
Join us to celebrate the release of Listening Like A Girl, with Juliana Gleeson.
Defining femininity is an intriguing pursuit. Socially constructed and individually experienced, its definition changes across time and place. For some, it is found in the shape of the body or the length of the hair. For others, it is in the emotional response, a unique sensitivity and openness. For many, it suggests passivity.
In Listening Like A Girl, Juliana Gleeson argues that at the core of the feminine is the act of listening, and more to the point, listening more intently than those speaking. While society constructs listening as a form of passivity, it hides an inherent power as a highly skilled and competent act, capable of undermining patriarchal expectations.
Extrapolating from this core observation, Gleeson takes the reader on a cultural and theoretical journey. She explores figures from pop singer Troye Sivan to Jacqueline Rose, provides new perspectives on butch and bisexuality, and the links between femininity and communist politics.
Juliana Gleeson is a writer and salonnière born in west London, living in east Berlin. She is known for adoring the em dash—and one censored newspaper interview. She is the author of Hermaphrodite Logic and the co-editor of Transgender Marxism. Listening Like A Girl is Juliana’s second release with Pluto Press.

📚 A note on the bookshop space and expectations. The bookshop space is small, so events like this tend to be magical, intimate, low key and occasionally chaotic. Seating is a mix of some chairs with backs, as well as benches, stools and floor cushions. Lighting is soft and low. The big doors can open for ventilation - and we always do a check before we start to make sure everyone is comfortable, and to make sure everyone who needs a seat has one. Get in touch if you need a space reserved.
Please note: There is (still) no bathroom at the bookshop. The closest accessible toilets are Glad Cafe and Tramway.
The bookshop has level access from the street. Let us know if you need more venue information or have specific questions on access / disability / neurodiversity needs.
