MEITEI × Tetsutaro Kamatani × Ryosokuin Special Performance
— A Special Program for Tetsutaro Kamatani: Threshold between Reality and Illusion —
On Saturday, December 19, 2026, musician MEITEI and contemporary artist Tetsutaro Kamatani come together for a one-day-only special performance at Ryosokuin in Kyoto.
Presented as a special program for Kamatani’s solo exhibition, Threshold between Reality and Illusion, the performance will feature the premiere of a new composition written by MEITEI especially for the exhibition. Kamatani’s works, installed within Ryosokuin, will resonate with MEITEI’s music, creating a scene unique to this place and this moment.
Centered on the Hojo and Daishoin halls, which are not normally open to the public, the exhibition brings Kamatani’s work into dialogue with the temple’s spaces. In the Daishoin, a large folding screen measuring approximately 2.1 meters high and 8.3 meters wide draws inspiration from the garden visible from the hall.
The performance will take place amid Kamatani’s exhibited works. Join us for a moment in which the actual garden, the painted world, and music come together.

■ About MEITEI
Creating a New Japanese Kata Through Sound
Born in Onomichi, Hiroshima, MEITEI is a Kyoto-based musician.
A sense of Japan that is at once familiar and elusive, lingering as a subtle presence—MEITEI calls these delicate impressions, felt by many yet difficult to put into words, “Shitsunihon,” or “Lost Japanese Mood.”
Using contemporary sound techniques, he reinterprets subtle impressions rooted in Japanese culture, continually developing his own distinct kata—forms of artistic expression shaped by Japanese sensibilities.
His works Kwaidan, Komachi, and the Kofū series have earned acclaim in Japan and internationally, receiving coverage in leading music publications including The Wire and Pitchfork.
In recent years, he has expanded his practice to temples, cultural heritage sites, and museums.
■ About Tetsutaro Kamatani
Born in Osaka in 1979, Kamatani is currently based in Tokyo and New York. Having decided to become a painter at the age of twenty, he has since pursued an independent artistic practice.
Grounded in a keen understanding of the relationship between late capitalism and the image, his early works engaged with the languages of appropriation and simulation through painting, earning recognition within the Japanese art scene. Kamatani has since devoted more than two decades to exploring the possibilities of collage in painting. Working with self-developed materials, his current body of work—defined by gold lines and arrangements of vivid pigments—marks a culmination of that ongoing exploration.
The resplendent pictorial universe he has cultivated, characterized by a richly layered interplay of image and material, has earned widespread acclaim among art professionals and collectors. His work is held in the collection of Archduke Géza von Habsburg as well as other notable collections, and continues to garner growing international recognition.
■ About Ryosokuin
A Zen temple with more than 600 years of history, Ryosokuin stands adjacent to Gion, Kyoto’s historic geisha district.
Since its founding in 1358, it has served both as a place of Zen study and as a hub of cultural exchange, welcoming prominent painters such as Hasegawa Tohaku and Ito Jakuchu, as well as distinguished literary figures such as Ueda Akinari.
In recent years, Ryosokuin has hosted numerous exhibitions by contemporary artists acclaimed in Japan and internationally. Building on its history and traditions, the temple actively embraces contemporary artistic expression as it explores new possibilities for Zen.
