THE BOOK
This is a collection of poems that explores desire, disobedience, death and horsegirlhood. It is about a poet grappling with the loss of a sister to ALS/Motor Neurone Disease. It is a middle finger to the boundaries between fantasy, memory and reality. It has ponies in it. It is a celebration of defiance. It is a dance through the debris of an indifferent world to celebrate connections between siblings, friends, classmates, comrades, elders, lovers-– people we are lucky enough to experience life with, even if just for a moment.
“Stephanie Chan turns school halls, street directories, potatoes, bad parties, queer desire, family mythology and an improbable number of horses into poems that ask how we remember the people and places that make us. Even as grief gathers at its edges, this collection refuses solemnity. Chan writes with mischief, startling intimacy and enormous heart.” – Pooja Nansi, author of we make spaces divine
