The play “671 – THE HUNT” on October 15th at the Studio Stage of the CNP🎭

Hana Rastoder “671 – THE HUNT” October 15 at 8 PM — Studio Stage The play 671 – The Hunt is inspired by the crime committed in Štrpci on February 27, 1993, when twenty civilian passengers were abducted from the train of the same name. The play follows the drama of a family traumatized by the loss of one of its members, exploring the repercussions of a social crisis on one of its fundamental units — the family. Overnight, the family finds itself without social support, surrounded by darkness and left without answers concerning the fate of their abducted loved ones, amid the disintegration of their former homeland — Yugoslavia. The more silent and deaf the authorities become to the questions posed by the family, the more, as hope gives way to disappointment, the family grows embittered towards society — primarily towards the authorities, but also towards members of other nationalities, fellow citizens, neighbours and others. The family lives in fear, with everyday life marked by a constant sense of vulnerability. Paradoxically, this fuels individual destructiveness and ultimately leads to the disintegration of the family, leaving lifelong trauma that will unconsciously be passed on to their children. The primary aim of the play is to address the consequences of a lack of dialogue and the “expiration” of such cases by opening up the subject of a specific crime. The creative team seeks to draw attention to the consequences of neglecting the individual and collective traumas of the 1990s. Ultimately, such neglect allows for greater freedom in interpreting and reconstructing events, as well as their relativization. After many years, society becomes increasingly preoccupied with numbers rather than with the crime itself and the circumstances that led to it. The play suggests that, both directly and indirectly, everyone bears the cost of such crimes, and that the question of interethnic conflict is inevitably connected to the issue of profiteering by those who gave the orders. Through this “case study” of Štrpci, the play seeks to open questions of responsibility, guilt and the consequences that such actions have left on the families of victims, perpetrators, witnesses and, ultimately, the children who were born during those years. The relevance of the text was further underscored by the 30th anniversary of the crime, marked on February 27, 2023.
