In Serbia, a new generation is trying to rewrite history. The question of freedom, something people in this country have fought for time and again, in many different ways, is once again at the centre of attention. In the 1990s, Belgrade’s underground club scene became a very particular arena for that struggle.
Pavle Terzić’s documentary Bajka bespovratnog vremena (A Fairy Tale of Irretrievable Time) offers a glimpse into Belgrade’s legendary club culture and the emergence of the Serbian electronic music scene. It pulls us into the 1990s, when, amid war, sanctions and isolation, clubs became islands of freedom, self-expression and resistance.

We fell in love with this film, so we’re bringing it to Budapest for two special screenings. At ATNO, the screening will be followed by a party that goes on until morning, featuring some of the defining Belgrade DJs of that era, alongside DJ Budai, who was himself a regular guest at clubs across Serbia during the golden age of Serbian techno.

A film. A legendary era. A night in the name of freedom.
