Over the past few years Baba Stiltz has dedicated himself to the guitar and the live practice of performance. Utilizing a no-nonsense approach, he has distilled his sets to their bare necessities: guitar, amplifier, and voice. Informed by the free-improvisational stylings of Eugene Chadbourne, the evocative repetitions of Spacemen 3, and the lyrical, half-spoken conviction of country, Stiltz’s work feels disarmingly upfront. In an age dominated by vibes and aesthetics, Stiltz’s advocacy for direct transmission feels both refreshing and faintly confrontational. Country music perhaps.
