No Map is a rare free-improvisation encounter bringing American saxophonists Allan Chase and David Carlos Valdez together with Vietnamese musicians Bùi Phú An and San Trịnh.
Allan Chase brings five decades of creative-music experience, including work with Rashied Ali’s Prima Materia, Your Neighborhood Saxophone Quartet, Berklee College of Music and New England Conservatory.
Hanoi-based David Carlos Valdez brings his practice in experimental jazz, composition and free improvisation.
Trained at the Vietnam National Academy of Music, Bùi Phú An brings Vietnamese traditional percussion and đàn bầu into an entirely open musical setting.
San Trịnh is a New York-based jazz guitarist, composer and producer whose work moves between contemporary jazz, improvisation, ambient textures and Vietnamese musical influences. A Berklee graduate and 2024 Jimi Hendrix Award recipient, he recently returned to Hanoi with his electronic-jazz quartet Sautéed Grabba.
The four musicians meet in a new cross-generational collaboration, bringing together distinct musical backgrounds and improvisational approaches.
Rather than conventional “East-West fusion,” No Map is built around real-time listening: distinct musical languages meeting without a predetermined score or stylistic outcome.
